DIY Spring Planter Box

I have been dreaming of a wooden planter box for my kitchen table for awhile now. It was SO easy to make this box and I am not sure why I waited so long to finish this project. It makes the perfect Spring centerpiece!

I have been dreaming of a planter box for our kitchen table for AGES. There are so many cute ways to decorate these wooden boxes and they are so easy to make! I finally had some time last weekend to put the husband to work on cutting down some wood so that we could build this adorable box. I decorated it for the Spring with some large hydrangea blooms. We have a limelight hydrangea bush in our backyard and I can't wait to put fresh blooms in it later this Spring! Today I'll share with you how we created this simple box for our table and how you can create one of your own.

















My husband drew up this little sketch to figure out how it would look when he built it. I purchased large mason jars at Hobby Lobby, so we had to use a 1X6 for the base and for the sides we used 1X4's.
The bottom piece of wood is a 1X6 (cut down to 4.5" wide) and the side pieces of wood are 1X4's.





Here is the planter box after he cut the base and the longer sides.
Gluing the wood and holding it together with clamps before nailing it together.





In this photo he is measuring to see what size to make the shorter sides. Then you'll glue and nail those ends onto the box.





The finished box, ready for some chalk paint!





I painted 2 coats of chalk paint onto the box and then I distressed it with fine grit sandpaper.





Here is a detail shot of what the box looked like after I distressed it with the fine grit sandpaper.





I added the large mason jars to the box along with some huge hydrangea blooms I found at Hobby Lobby and I was quite pleased with the results! I know this planter box will get a lot of use and will be a delight to decorate each holiday and season!
