Upcycle Challenge: Planter...

I was invited to participate in the 2016 Calgary Home + Garden Show Upcycle Challenge to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta in conjunction with Rust-Oleum Canada!... Each of the challenge participants selected items from the Calgary ReStore to turn into a Planter!... Planter was the chosen theme of this year's Upcycle Challenge!

The items that I treasure hunted from the ReStore for my planter were the glass of a hanging light fixture, a piece of crown moulding and a cabinet door!... As soon as I came across the light fixture glass I knew what I wanted to do!...





Oh yeah!... this was sponsored by Rust-Oleum Canada!... and each of the participants (There were nine of us) got a mystery box of Rust-Oleum products that we had to use in completing our planters!...





Like I mention on my blog post, where you can see a few more photos and get a few more deets... the gold gods were smiling down on me!... when I opened the box there like a shiny sun ray was a gold spray!... There were a couple of other colours and products in there as well but these are the ones that I pulled out for my planter!...





I started by cutting the crown moulding down... I wanted to create a platform that the bell Jar would sit upon...





Each piece was glued and then air nailed to secure it into place.





*pew, pew, pew*





lots of *pew, pew, pews* later and I had the sides of my platform together!... next for the top...





Using the cabinet door I cut a square to fit into the opening that would sit flush with the top of the moulding... the cabinet door had a vinyl veneer type layer on it that peeled off easily once it was cut to size... the cabinet door was smooth MDF underneath...





...next I busted out the wood filler to fill the nail holes and any seams in the peace... I wanted the platform to be seamless!... once dried I gave the filler a light sanding to smooth out any unevenness and to remove any excess...





Before going at the metal hardware of the bell jar I gave it all a white spray... I like a nice white underneath my gold spray paint... even though the gold spray paint had a primer built in.





The platform I attacked with three coats of the Chalked... three to make the white nice and opaque... I did sand lightly between coats to cut down on brush strokes and then finished the platform off with two coats of the Chalked Matte Clear... Matte Clear was the perfect finish for the white platform...





Inside the bell jar, on top of the platform I placed an asparagus fern that I'd planted in a moss ball planter!... I have a tutorial on my website showing you how to make your very own mall ball planters!... be sure to check it out if you're looking to whip up your very own!
